Starting April 7th, I’m taking a long break from entertaining on cruise ships to hike the 2,200 mile (3,540km) Appalachian Trail, from Georgia to Maine.

I’ve always loved hiking in the mountains, and have wanted to hike the ‘AT’ for many years. Now is the time to do it! I’m aiming for a rather ambitious pace, hoping to conclude the hike by August. At that rate, I’ll have to average over 20 miles per day, which still allows me several days ‘off’ for rest, bad weather, etc. You’ll want to keep your eyes peeled on www.wherethehelliscarl.com, as the website will be show a live, satellite-based update of my location as I hike North. I’ll also do my best to add blog posts, photos and videos to the website.

Over the duration of the hike, covering approximately 6 million steps, I’ll achieve nearly half a MILLION feet of elevation change. I’ll carry everything on my back including food, water, shelter, clothing, and my electronics.
